First name

The form of the first names depends on the person's nationality. Example: Johan Oxenstierna, Johann Faltz and John Ruthwen.

Surname

The last name of persons, names of institutions (such as the parliament and the King’s Council) and also names of cities. Names have been modernized according to guidelines from (1) The Dictionary of Swedish National Biography, (2) The Swedish National Encyclopaedia, (3) current scientific literature, and (4) indexes in the National Archives. The names of royals are given in the Swedish name form (e.g. Ludvig XIII), names of princes are given with the addition of the princely house or principality (e.g. Bernard of Sachsen-Weimar).

Title

Title of the sender or recipient is given if possible, even when it is not specified in the source.

Where possible, titles have been supplemented with information on e.g. county

Date

Dates are written yyyy-mm-dd (e.g. 1642-09-15). Searches can be made for a particular day (1642-09-15), month (1642-09) or year (1642). All letters are registered on dates in accordance with the Old Style (the Julian Calendar). It is noted when the original had used any other calendar.

Place of issue

It is possible to search for certain places where letters have been issued. The dropdown list indicates which locations that are registered in the database.

Type of document

The following types of documents are registered in the database:

  • Letters to Axel Oxenstierna
  • Letters from Axel Oxenstierna
  • Royal letters set up by Axel Oxenstierna or signed by him alone
  • Speeches by Axel Oxenstierna
  • Writings otherwise set up or signed by Axel Oxenstierna, such as resolutions, instructions and contracts
  • Documents etc. concerning Axel Oxenstierna

The text of the letters is based on the dispatched original. If this is missing, the editor has used a copy or draft. Textual variants from other versions are only noted if the editor has deemed them of importance to the language or interpretation of the text.

In the database letters and writings in several languages are registered: Swedish, Danish, English, French, Dutch, Latin, Scottish and German, as well as combinations of languages.

Archival institution

Searches can be limited to documents that are kept in any of the archival institutions or libraries registered in the database. For documents from the National Archives it is also possible to search for documents belonging to certain collections.

All kinds of source publications have been noted, except AOSB. This information is presented in abbreviated form (usually with name of editor / mainword + year) and is linked to a list containing the full bibliographical data.

All texts are cataloged in the database has a unique registration number. If you want to search for a specific number used this search field.

Here it is possible to do full text search on words appearing in summaries of the content of letters or in headlines to documents.

In this search field it is possible to do full text search on words that appear in the texts of the letters. To find words in the text of a specific letter, use the browser's search function.

References to literature are not intended to be complete, but should instead be seen as suggestions for further reading from the editors. The references, presented in abbreviated form, are linked to a list of full bibliographic data.

Text and photos

The letters belonging to the text editions are published with complete texts, critical notes and comments. For a minor selection there are only descriptions. Most letters are also represented by images of the originals.
