By using the public APIs of the National Archives you accept the terms and conditions outlined below. See also the terms of use of the National Archives' search service (in swedish).

APIs

The National Archives provide the following APIs:

Personal data and copyright

The public APIs of the National Archives return only data which are older than 110 years and data which the National Archives have deemed in compliance with GDPR. The National Archives keep logs of API calls for statistics use. This logging includes the IP-address of the user/client. The log data is only used for statistics and is deleted after, at the most, eighteen months. Note that if an external service uses a IIIF viewer.

the IIIF API calls are made from the user’s web browser. If the image viewer calls the National Archives IIIF service directly, these API calls will be logged by the National Archives as described above. The provider of this external service thus has to notify the users of the service of this logging. The National Archives recommend service providers to use a proxy for the IIIF service. There is a more detailed description in the API documentation

The majority of the archival records are public documents, where copyright does not apply. Digitized archival records thus mostly have the rights statement Public Domain Mark 1.0

Exceptions use other Creative Commons licenses.

The text of the archival inventories and the associated structured metadata mostly have the rights statement CC0 1.0 universell

Exceptions use other Creative Commons licenses.

Authentication and authorization

The public APIs of the National Archives require neither authentication nor an API key. Since all available data are open as described above in the passage on personal data and copyright, there is no need for authorization.

Availability and limitations

The availability of the APIs depends on the server and network capacity at hand. The National Archives may limit the volumes of API use if the need arises, Rate Limiting

If a specific API client utilizes available resources to such an extent that other users’ access to the National Archives digital services is affected negatively, the National Archives may block that client temporarily, during investigation of and a dialogue about the usage.
