Contents Rutgers has received AO’s letter dated 12 August [in which he is asked to spare no efforts in raising money for the fourth instalment of Älvsborg’s ransom]. He has reported in detail about the transactions in a letter signed by van Dijck as well [see Rutgers’ letter of 1618-09-18, 4003]. His uncle [Hugo Muys van Holy] is also working to promote Swedish interests and he is optimistic about the outcome. The States of Holland will meet again on 8 October (N. S.). Rutgers has not yet had time to go to Emden [see Rutgers’ letter of 1618-08-19, 2230]. Since Count Enno III himself has borrowed 40,000 florins from the States General with strict terms, there is, however, not much to hope for. Rutgers denies that there is rivalry between himself and ambassador van Dijck.
