Contents
Contents Rutgers has got a part of his salary, but finds it difficult to manage. The magnificent generosity of his predecessor, van Dijck, makes it impossible for him to be parsimonious. AO has also sent a draft for 17,000 Imperial thalers for the payment of the ships, but since Monier has departed and the ships have been paid for, Rutgers has asked the merchant Krivitz not to transfer the money for the time being. - The States General have sent two delegates to Rutgers asking for repayment of their loans to Sweden, since the Dutch Republic is in great difficulties and the enemy is powerful. Rutgers answered that Gustav II Adolf, too, is under pressure from Poland and has to maintain a large army. Rutgers does not doubt that the Dutch will prove compliant, but adds that if he had had 10,000-12,000 dalers at his disposition, it would have been easier to act successfully. He lets AO understand that that is how Christian IV does business. - He encloses a treatise on the state of the Dutch in Persia in view of Peenen's case, a letter on the state of the Swiss, some intercepted Spanish letters from Brazil and a booklet from Frederick V, whose consort has given birth to their sixth child.
