Rutgers reports on a number of charges given by the King: He had all but recruited Marlo for Swedish service, but when Monier’s position became vacant, Marlo got that and chose to stay home. Monier has, however, suggested another, more competent, candidate. Rutgers will send Bureus’ map as soon as it is finished. He asks for a map of the territories Gustav II Adolf wants to lease to stimulate peasants to go there. A printer plans to make a publication of the most splendid castles in Europe, and Rutgers asks AO to send pictures of great Swedish buildings illustrated with verses. He recommends the painter Lorens van de Plas (Plaes) who is on his way to Sweden to paint inter alia Gustav II Adolf’s portrait. Rutgers has sent a copy of his Variae lectiones to the King. Bertius has sent a copy of his Commentariorum rerum Germanicarum libri tres, and Rutgers recommends that he be paid. Rutgers, who has paid 2,084 florins to Nieulandt, asks permission to reimburse himself from the copper when it comes. He also asks for a receipt for the 16,000 Imperial thalers he brought to Älvsborg earlier in the year [see Rutgers’ letter of 1618-02-14, 2070]. Once again he recommends Heinsius and also Heurnius (van Heurne), who is related to all the burgomasters and magistrates at Leiden. He has asked Langer to send his library back to Holland and asks AO to intercede with his authority to secure the transport. For news Rutgers refers to the letter by Muys van Holy who reports about the instructions given to the ambassadors of the States General to Denmark. He stresses that this letter must be kept absolutely secret, even from van Dijck.
