The Dutch ambassadors to Sweden have given a very favourable report about King Gustav II Adolf, which brought about a change in opinion and encouraged Oldenbarnevelt to bring the Swedes' charge concerning a loan up at the next meeting with the States in early September. Oldenbarnevelt, Brederode and two others are very favourably disposed to the Swedes. However, the Dutch ambassador [Noël de Caron] to King James of Great Britain unexpectedly reports that the king requests the Dutch to pay back all at once they were to pay during the next 18 months [cf. Rutgers' letter of 1616-07-01, 2048]. That demand may frustrate the Swedes' hopes. As far as the city of Amsterdam is concerned, Rutgers and van Dijck have brought the matter up with Pauw and Bas, but no loan can be expected from that city. However Pauw and Bas promise to pursue the matter at the meeting with the States. The King should be prepared for all contingencies. - The Prince of Britain has married the second daughter of the King of France; the Prince of Condé has returned to court after having got his own way. - The other day one of the whalers returned from Greenland with a full load, and no one had stood in their way. - There is a rumour that a Spanish ambassador will go to Denmark. The States are on their guard.
